Why Choose Community Foundation of Southern Maryland (CFSOMD)?

We are your resource for giving and here is why:
  1. CFSOMD Provides Advice For All Types Of Giving
    • We provide information on a range of planned giving options – from executing gifts of real estate, stock, or personal property to establishing donor advised funds or income-producing charitable annuities. The Community Foundation helps advisors provide their clients with the best charitable giving strategies based on each client’s unique financial situation, tax status, and giving goals.
    • We can help the recipient in bequests or help trustees act as stewards on behalf of client’s wishes to address specific areas of community needs in perpetuity.
    • Giving through a community foundation also provides a client time and resources for evaluating potential grant recipients, as well as the ability to give to multiple charities with a single gift.
    • CFSOMD vs. Private Foundation

  2. CFSOMD Is an Expert on Local Needs
    • We provide in-depth information on local needs and nonprofit organizations. When clients ask, "How can I make sure my charitable gifts will make a difference?" you can turn to your local community foundation for information on the programs and agencies that are working well in the specific areas of interest. The CFSOMD is in touch with local organizations and activities addressing the broad spectrum of community needs – from arts and culture, education and scholarships, the environment, to general community improvements, health and wellness and youth initiatives. National Standards For U.S. Community Foundations

Confirmed in Compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations The National Standards Seal by our name indicates official confirmation from the Council on Foundations that we have met the most rigorous standards in philanthropy. It affirms our commitment to financial security, transparency and accountability. It says our grantmaking includes an open, competitive process designed to address the changing needs of our community. The National Standards Seal also confirms our history of honoring donors’ wishes—to support the arts, cultivate gardens, save endangered species, cure illness, expand literacy, feed children—and support countless other important causes.

The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations Program was established in 2000 in cooperation with the Council on Foundations. National Standards guide community foundations in establishing legal, ethical and effective operational practices that serve as blueprints for internal development and benchmarks for external assessment. The 41 National Standards require Community Foundation of Southern Maryland to document its policies in donor services, investment management, grantmaking and administration. To receive confirmation of National Standards compliance, Community Foundation of Southern Maryland submitted its organizational and financial policies and procedures to a rigorous peer review.
