Philanthropy Day Luncheon
November 14, 2008
Foundation Gives Back by Honoring Philanthropists in Charles County
Approximately 150 people joined the Community Foundation of Charles County (CFCC) at their 3rd annual Philanthropy Day Luncheon on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Community Center. In addition, to presenting the annual awards — the Nonprofit, Philanthropist and Volunteer of the Year, the Foundation "unveiled" the Philanthropy Hall of Fame. (see more on annual awards below)
Keynote speaker, Colonel (Ret.) Kenneth McCreedy, eloquently spoke of the past, recognizing Charles County’s 350th anniversary. He shared with the guests of how his own life was shaped by gifts received and reminded us of the many pioneers who have worked a lifetime to lay the foundation we stand on today. McCreedy stated, "It is within the power of each of us to continue the habits of giving beyond our lifetimes; it is within our ability to leave a legacy that continues to strengthen the foundations of our society and meet the needs of people we may never meet or know." In efforts to coincide with Charles County’s 350th anniversary and to honor those pioneers, the CFCC "unveiled" the Philanthropy Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is made up of individuals and organizations who were nominated by the public for their lifetime of giving to make Charles County the best place to live. Annual Luncheon Honors Philanthropists, Nonprofits and Volunteers
This year’s luncheon was a success and we have the community to thank. Despite bank bailouts, fallen stock markets and the new election, members of this community are pushing forward and we feel honored to recognize them.
Each year the Community Foundation of Charles County (CFCC) requests nominations of individuals and organizations whom exceeded their expectations and serviced Charles County in extraordinary ways. Each recipient is honored with a framed print of a Blue Heron donated to CFCC by local artist Rose Beitzell (and framed by Bernie’s) with an enscription of their award. With that said, we are thrilled to announce the award recipients for the philanthropist, nonprofit and volunteer of the year.
The Philanthropist of the Year Award went to Michael Besche, President and CEO
of Besche Oil. As Chair of the CSM’s Campaign for the Next 50 Years, he helped raise over $7M.
The Nonprofit of the Year Award went to Citizens for the Charles County Library.
The Citizens were instrumental in the development of new initiatives for the
library system such as participation in The Big Read,
One Maryland, One Book, the Cooperating Collection of
The Foundation Center, and the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation to up grade technology.
The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Barbara "Bobbie"
Baldus. For her love of Charles County she has put forth a
great effort to make sure folks celebrate Charles County
during its year-long celebration of its 350th anniversary.
