WALDORF, MD – At the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland’s 8th Annual Philanthropy Day Luncheon, Jack Russell, President of St. Mary’s County Commissioners read to the guests at the luncheon a Proclamation recognizing November 15 as National Philanthropy Day® (NPD). Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties all have dedicated this day to National Philanthropy Day®.

According to the Association Fundraising Professionals, “Fall is the giving season. Our past studies have shown that most charities rely on the final three months of the year for anywhere between one-third and one-half of the annual contributions—and in some cases, even more. That’s a lot of impact!”

At the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland, we celebrate National Philanthropy Day® by recognizing those who have given an extraordinary amount of time and treasure to our lives, our community and our country at our annual Philanthropy Day Luncheon, on Friday, November 1, 2013. According to Gretchen Hardman, “This year’s honorees followed very different paths, but all three shared one common character trait and it was their love of humankind, which is the true meaning of philanthropy. Our 2013 Philanthropy Hall of Fame inductees are: Wilson H. Parran, Nancy Gasparovic, and H. Thomas Waring.”

When NPD was first celebrated in 1986, then-President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially recognizing Nov. 15, 1986, as National Philanthropy Day®. Since then, the day has been recognized by numerous state, provincial and local governments across North America, according to Association of Fundraising Professionals website.
